IcurrentlyplayonaBuffetVintageR13.Iboughtitnewback at the end of 2006, after playing an R13 since 1979.WhenIdecidedtolookforanewclarinet,Iplayedavariety ofclarinets,andlotsofthem.Buffets(R13,R13Greenline, Prestige,Festival,Tosca),Leblancs(Concerto,Opus,Pete Fountain),Selmers(can'trememberwhichones!),Yamahas (CSG,SEV).IreallylikedatheYamahaSEV.UntilIfoundthe VintageR13.ComparedtomyoldR13,itplaysintune,is more resonant, is more responsive, and it has a great sound.Ilearnedsomethingswhileshoppingforanewclarinet.First, everyinstrumentplaysdifferent.So,ifyou'regoingtobuy oneovertheinternet,trytogetafewinyourshipment. Betteryet,gotoaplacethathasahugesupply.Inmyarea, thatplaceisWashingtonMusicCenter.Unbelievable selection,andLeeWalkowichwasahelpful,honestsalesman thatwantedmetofindtherightinstrument,nomatterhow longittook. Atanytime,theyprobablyhadatleast10R13's, 2Vintages,2Prestiges,2Toscas,avarietyofSelmersand Yamahas.Somuchnicerthandrivingtoastoretofindthat theyonlyhave1.So,bottomline-makesureyoutrya bunch.Second-silverkeysmakeadifference.Ineverwould've thoughtso,butwhenplaytestingabunchforastudent,I learnedthisvaluablelesson.Iguessthesilverresonates better than the nickel. So, spend the extra dough for silver.Checkintonation.Ididfindconsistencieswithinmodels,but everyoneplaysdifferent.R13'sseemedtoplayflatterasI wentfromlowCtoopenG.Ifyouwillbeplayingwithother R13's,thisisprobablyagoodthing.Ifyou'redoingsolowork, youdon'tneedtogothisroute.TheVintageR13'sintonation was great, however.Bringalongsomeotherears.Ifyouhaveafellowmusician thatyoucanplayinfrontof,itmayhelptovalidatewhat you're hearing.Ifyouhavetheopportunity,haveyourteacherplaythem.A moreexperiencedearwillbeabletopickuponsubtle differences. Ultimately it's your decision, however.Mouthpiece-wise,IuseaJodyJazzClassic9mouthpiecewith SilverRicoHLigatureandMitchellLurie31/2reedsforjazz, andaFobesSanFranciscowithGonazales4reedsfor classical.

IpurchasedmyLASTtenorin2009.YamahaCustomZunlacqueredwiththegold-platedneck,selectedbyJeff Coffin.Priortothis,IhadaCustomZunlacqueredwithout thehighF#sinceearly2006.Ilovethe YamahaCustomZ. The JeffCoffinmodelwassetupnice-keyworkjustfeltbetter, andthehornrespondedgreat.Thegoldplatedneckgaveita littlemoretonalcolorthantheunlacqueredneck,sothat's whatIplayonnow.ThankstoLeeWalkowichatWashington MusicCenterforgivingmefirstcrackatthishorn,andatan unbelievable price.IuseaJodyJazzDVCHI7*mouthpiecewithJodyJazzRing LigatureandRicoJazzSelectUnfiled2Hreeds.Jody's mouthpieceistheholygrailthatIwassearchingforformany years.
